Why Use PCR Plastic?
PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic refers to materials recovered from products that have completed their life cycle, such as packaging, appliances, and automotive parts used by consumers. In contrast, PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled) plastic originates from manufacturing waste—including sprues, off-spec products, and defective items—generated during production and recycled directly within industrial facilities. The key distinction lies in the source and volume: PCR represents a significantly larger waste stream from daily consumption. Without recycling, post-consumer plastics contribute massively to pollution each year. Adopting PCR materials helps address this environmental challenge while supporting circular economy goals. Furthermore, regulatory measures are increasingly favoring PCR adoption. For example, the UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax imposes a fee of £200 per ton on packaging with less than 30% recycled content. Similarly, corporate social responsibility mandates in China and other regions are encouraging both domestic and international brands to integrate PCR plastics into their products.
